NEW YEAR'S EVE PATROL - 1944-45
by Dee R. Eberhart
The cathedral's song
soared on high.
Midnight flares lit
up the sky.
Tracers probed
from across the Rhine,
And were answered in kind
all down our line.
It was not a glüchliches
neues Jahr,
For our young men
who had come so far,
To freeze and die in
the icy blast,
Of the Nordwind attack,
Hitler's last!
